Electrical Panel Upgrade Cost: 100 to 200 Amps and Beyond

What it costs to move from 100 to 200 amps or to 400-amp service, what the utility has to do, and which incentives still exist.

100 to 200 amps

This Old House says most homeowners pay $1,300 to $3,000 to upgrade from 100 to 200 amps. HomeGuide puts it at $1,300 to $1,600, or $1,800 to $2,500 if a new service panel is needed. Angi says the average is about $1,600.

400-amp service

Angi and This Old House both put a 400-amp upgrade at $2,000 to $4,000, and This Old House says a brand-new 400-amp installation runs $4,000 to $6,000. Fixr is far higher at $8,000 to $12,000, so get several quotes for this size.

Why an upgrade costs more than a swap

Angi notes that the meter box and the wire coming into the house may be rated for only 100 or 150 amps and will need upgrading too. A new meter base runs $200 to $800 (Angi), and HomeAdvisor puts a new overhead service entrance cable at $1,000 to $1,500, with underground service far more.

How the job runs

  • Your electrician pulls a permit, typically $50 to $300.
  • The electrician schedules the power cut with your utility, which disconnects service.
  • The old panel comes out and the new one goes in.
  • The local inspector checks the work.
  • The utility reconnects power to the new panel.

Tax credits and rebates in 2026

The federal 25C credit that once paid 30% of a qualifying panel upgrade, up to $600, ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025, according to the IRS. Some cost guides still list it, so do not count on it. The separate Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates program allows up to $4,000 for an electrical panel for households under 150% of area median income (DOE), but it runs through state energy offices, only some states had launched it, and programs end when their funding is used up. Check your state energy office before you plan around it.
