Signs You Need a New Electrical Panel
Warning signs that a panel is failing or too small, and how long panels typically last.
Warning signs
- Breakers that trip often
- Lights that flicker or dim when appliances start
- A panel that feels warm or hot
- A burning smell, or buzzing or crackling from the panel
- Rust, scorch marks or damage on the panel or outlets
- An FPE, Zinsco, Challenger or Pushmatic panel
- Plans for an EV charger, heat pump or other large new load
How long panels last
This Old House says electrical panels typically last 25 to 40 years. Angi and Forbes list a panel more than about 25 years old as a reason to have it checked.
Safety
A hot panel, burning smell or scorch marks are reasons to call a licensed electrician right away, not to wait for a quote. This Old House and HomeGuide both say panel replacement is not a do-it-yourself job, and it requires a permit and a utility disconnect.
